I was just thinking that I have not blogged for a while. It seems only fitting that Today I put a small blog together. This time 8 years ago, I was back at work, recovering from having just become the most recent Channel Swimmer, most of my colleagues were stupefied that I had actually made it into the office. I was the last successful swim of 2008. It was the start of a life changing journey for me.
I apologise for not writing but I have had a rough few weeks on many fronts. However, I have also had an Amazing time, if there is such thing as “The Yin And The Yan” in life, I have had plenty of both over the last couple of weeks most of which put me out of the pool for a while and Only now, after about 5 weeks out of the lakes and pools, I am slowly starting to get back into it. One of the reasons that put me out of action was a pretty nasty fall where The SlimHippo and I were out for a walk and I climbed over a turnstile – no problems there. Then I went to step off the curb into the field and next thing I knew, I was writhing around on the floor in absolute agony. No I am not a footballer, no I had not been knocked over by a butterfly and sadly I do not get paid gazillions of pounds a year for good acting and terrible football. I had rolled over my ankle and there sounded like a lot of crunching when I did it.
Never fear, I had the slimhippo with me, her first thoughts were I had broken my ankle – it was mine as well. She had the phone out to dial the Air Ambulance. When the faint feeling had subsided, I got up and managed to at least put some pressure on it and eventually walk home. So not broken!! Well, it was fat for a few weeks and when this had subsided, I could walk fine but any sideways movement was a bit tricky. I tried venturing back into the pool and my swimming was fine – well my arms. I soon learnt that any form of kicking aggravated my ankle so I was back to Just arms with my legs just dragging behind me as added resistance. I have been working – mostly mentally on getting my ankle back to good strength. I have never really been one to pop pills to deal with my pain. Much to the bemusement of the slimhippo, who reaches for the meds for any gripe or pain.
I was just glad to be back in the water and trying to get some exercise into these lazy bones. However, I have loved following some amazing swims, vicariously over the last 5 weeks, tracking friends and acquaintances all over the world thanks to the joys of technology
So where too now?
Well thanks to a few plans which are being hatched on a personal front, I think I have a pretty busy couple of months ahead of me and I will be getting more active in the pool. I need to keep myself out of the house, otherwise I will be given stuff to do!!! The only Swim I am doing so far is the Jubilee River with a twist. As I have done it 3 times already, I have decided to enter a team of aspiring open water swimmers with me so it will be interesting not doing the whole thing. I will still be looking at a 20 mile plus swim – and there are plenty out there now. Probably stay closer to home rather than international.
One thing that has annoyed me over the last couple of weeks is just how popular this sport is becoming. Not because it is so popular per se but, Last week I entered into a conversation with a few swimmy friends about entering 2Swim4Life. A swim that has always scarred me due to its inherent challenges. I found a partner as I did not want to do it on my own and all I had to do was wait to be paid – BIG MISTAKE. 3 days after the conversation, I had the money and went to book and Low and behold, it was SOLD OUT.
I was really annoyed with myself but I am also trying to wrestle with a life where EVERYTHING has to be planned MONTHS in advance. For someone who lives by the seat of his pants and loves spontaneity, I am really living in the wrong era.One thing that amazes me is how popular this sport is becoming. I know of people who are booking their Channel swims for 2019. I think I booked mine 6 months before I did it. it seems that this behaviour is not really tolerated in this world. It is great at how popular it has become.
So to all my Swimmy friends and followers around the globe, I wish you all a great rest of the year swimming and I hope to see you all soon in some lake/pool or Ocean.
